WELCOME TO MESULLAM

This website focuses on historical studies of the ancient East in general, and in particular on the ancient Levant, which forms part of the Eastern world.
The boundaries of the East are defined here as Egypt, Persia, and Anatolia, while the Levant encompasses Palestine, Phoenicia, and coastal Syria (these definitions are personal and may not be universally accepted). The temporal span covered stretches from the Neolithic period up to the era of Hellenism.

The most important aspect is considered to be linguistic: over millennia, Semitic, Indo-European, Hamitic, and isolated languages converged in the East, giving rise to civilizations, writings, and religions—some of which continue to shape our modern world today. The final wave of civilization, marked especially by the spread of the Greek language, enabled the rise of Christianity. Christianity inherited the Israelite cult, adopted certain Greek conceptual categories, and ultimately, as a Church, became the universal heir of the Roman Empire. Even elements that did not maintain direct historical continuity nonetheless influenced what endured.

I have explored some of these themes in my book “The Tales of Mark, Luke and Matthew – A Different Introduction to the Synoptic Gospels”, presented on this website. In addition to discussing the linguistic transition from Aramaic to Greek, it highlights Christianity’s fundamental dependence on Judaism. Other important aspects will be addressed in future volumes.

In the Quaestiones Quodlibetales section, you’ll find further insights into the ancient Orient. Many other topics are covered on my social media channels, where you can leave comments and actively participate in the discussion.
